REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM THE
FIRST SNUG CONFERENCE

FROM: Pete Fischer

If anyone is curious about the SNUG Conference on Compuserve
on Aug 17th, I have a brief report. We had as many as 13-14 in
attendence from all across the country. It was generally
successful, although some time was lost due to some users being
unfamiliar with the system (Compuserve Chat) and also due to a
lack of concrete agenda and format. Nonetheless, even with these
limitations, a large number of ideas were discussed. In
particular, a newsletter and a Public Domain Software Library.
In the discussion of the newsletter, many presented variations
on the idea of making SNUG revolve around a BBS, and
dissemination the newsletter and software from there. But, even
among us "heavey modem users”, it was acknowledged that not all
users share our enthusiasm for telecommunications. So it was
nore or less decided that any newsletter MUST take the fora of
Hardcopy.

The second main issue discussed was the Public Domain
Library. In early descriptions of SNUG, it was suggested that
the way around the “everybody's-got-a-different-storage-device”
problem was to disseminate the PD software from a BBS. But
largely for the same reasons as the newsletter (i.e. it would
leave too many people out), we canned that idea. Next, a solely
tape-based distribution was proposed. But tape reproduction i.
very labor-intensive, and disk is so much wore efficient. So the
last concensus was that all the disk formats AND tape should be
supported. Some time was spent hashing out the mechanics of
this, but no decisions reached.

Finally, we all agreed to meet again in two weeks, on Aug
31. I hope to upload a more detailed desription of what
transpired and proposed agenda for the next discussion onto The
Astral Plane in the near future. Thanks for helping SNUG
grow... Pete

FROM; Jim Rodlin

Hello all, it was good to see that the SNUG conference went
well, with good attendance (I counted 15 people, assuming I
didn’t miss anyone)... Hopefully the meeting on the 3lst will be
equally as successful. One question though: We are all
participating in this, and offering our support, but who is
actually going to RUN the setup? Mel? And what will SNUG
actually 00? Who's going to publish the newsletter, and who will
tackle the formidable task of compiling a national PD software
library? And who is going to make these decisions? A few members
of our BCS group voiced concern that SNUG might overshadow the
local groups. What can SNUG do that the local groups aren't
already doing? The BCS S/T group is also in a peculiar position
because, although we are centered in Boston, the BCS is >
national organization and our aims are almost exactly the same
as SNUG's are. So how does this affect things?

TIMEX TIDBITS

Keith Sheehan is trying to get a Sinclair SIG going on the
Cyclops BBS. All the SYSOP needs is 5 Sinclair enthusiasts in
order to get one going. If you are interested, leave the SYSOP
EMAIL on the Cyclops BBS telling him that you would like to have
a Timex/Sinclair SIG. The Number for the Cyclops BBS is
839-5002.

The CATS Newsletter reports that a Timex Fest is being
planned for May 6th and 7th of 1989 in New Carrollton, Maryland.
The event will be hosted by the Capital Area Timex Sinclair
Users Group. For more information write: CATS, P.0.Box 467,
Fairfax Station, VA 22039.

Vernon Smith reports that the v1.2 Keyboard chips (advertised
in QL World) that are a replacement for the 8049 chip, work
perfectly. These new chips prevent the "rollover effect”, double
letters that occur when you accidently touch an adjacent key.

The ISTUG newsletter reports that the Pixel Print icons can
be used with the Zebra Systems Greating Card Designer program.
All you need to do is resave each of your Pixel Print icons with
".6" as an extension.

Butch Weinberg has reported that the Great Northwest
Computerfest was a great show. Although poorly attended, there
were plenty of interesting seminars and products. Butch has also
indicated that he is planning on purchasing video tape on the
seminars which we may use at a few of the upcomming CATUG

sings.

The HATS Newsletter reports that on page 103 of the September
issue of Popular Science, there is an ad for a Sinclair MSDOS
machine. The picture looks very auch like an Amstrad 1512. As
nost Timexers know, Amstrad owns the rights to the Sinclair
name. The company selling these machines is Electronic Express
and their phone number is (214) 247-4908.

Andy Hadesky (Editor of Timelinez) has sent the CATUG a
sample of how their latest newsletter was supposed to have been
published. There was concern because the issues that were
received by several of our members were unreadable. Andy's sorry
for the mishap and he has assured me that he will do everything
in his power to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

INTERFACE A JOYSTICK TO YOUR
TS-1000 OR 2X81
By Gary Lessenberry

Qne of ay great passions with ay 2X81 and TS-1000 computers
has been the many hardware projects that can be easily and
inexpensively built for them. The following project was inspired
by an article from the July edition of Syne magazine.

Many of the 2X programs use the unsifted arrow keys to direct
curor movements. This project will actually connect a joystick
to the arrow keys (5,6,7,8 & 0). There are two parts to this
project, the first part will install the joystick port. The
second part will modify the the joystick.

The following parts are required for this project:

1. One DB-9 connector

2. One Joystick (Radio Shack Part No. 270-1711)
3. Approx three feet of stranded wire

4. Solering iron and solder

5. One exacto knife

The easiest part of this project is actually installing the
joystick port. If you have moved your TS-100@ motherboard into
another case (as I have), finding a place to mount the joystick
port should pose no problem. Select you location and draw a
rough outline of the port there. Cut out the outline and mount
the DB-9 connector there. Using figures 1 & 2 as guides, solder
six wires from the DB-9 connector to the TS-1000's keyboard
connectors on the underside (non-component) of the TS-1000
motherboard. If you still have a virgin TS-1000, there isn’t
huct room, So you may choose to have the wires for the port exit
through a hole drilled in the side of the computer where the
joystick port will stand alone without being mounted.

For the joystick I used a Coleco joystick which I bought for
$2.95 at Radio Shack. Other joysticks can be used. I just like

this one because it’s cheap. First, open up the joystick case by
removing the five screws on the underside of the joystick.
Actually, four of the screws hold the case together abd the
fifth on holds the printed circuit board to the bottom of the
case. Remove the printed circuit board and turn it over so that
the underside (non component side) is visable. Using an exacto
knife, cut the D4 run as shown in figure 3. Using the stranded
wire, make three wire jumpers and solder them to the printed
circuit board in the locations illustrated in figure 3.
Reassemble the joystick.

To test your joystick, plug it into your TS-1000 joystick
port and apply power to your system. By moving the joystick
around and pressing the FIRE button, you should get the
indications listed in the table below.

The Midwest T/S Computer Conference is a big success! We are
going to break even on the expenses. We had 25 pre-paids and
about 75+ at the door. Some had their wifes and kids with them.
Everyone was buying and seliing. It was not swamped, but the
vendors and our club were not staring across the aisles at each
other either. What made my day was that i oougnt = iioclair Slat
Screen TV that ssid as oroke 72° EE 46 and it works! At had a
š ‘sie woh yt 7) Diva izay had extra Micro Drive Units for the
r $2.00 each. A+ had used working QL's for $45.00 each.
Other vendors had equally good deals. The details of the vendors
great deals where too numberous for me to report it all! Sharps
had the Midi Interface and software for the QL at $139.00! In
all this was the first time that I got see and touch most of the
QL stuff like the keyboard for QL up-grades and QL expandsion
boxes that I have only been able to readbout! I have only listed
here the items that took my interest and I can not do justice to

all vendors and flee market dealers in this limited space. In “—-

all it was fantastic to see that many Timex/Sinclair users and
vendors all at one time!

THIRD ANNUAL GREAT NORTHWEST
«fMEX/SINCLAIR MINI FAIR REPORT
(Reprinted From the VISTA Newsletter)

What I am refering to as "The Fair” took place August 6th &
7th at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Portland, Oregon. The fair's
advertised hours were 9-6, but for most everyone, it was two
solid days of "Sinclair Heaven". Attendance was estimated at
180+, quite a bit fewer tan the organizers (Time Designs
Magazine and CCAT/S User Group) were expecting, but those in
attendance were treated to the best our hobby had to offer. Seen
at the fair were Sharp's, with a table full of QL goods, the new
288 and Psion Organizer; SEATUG Group of Seattle, displaying
hardware demos, educational software and a Radio Shack Armatron
robot controlled by a TS-1000; VSUG of Vancouver, Canada with a
doorprize drawing and a computer display; Jack Dohany with his
extensive line of "Fairware’, hardware for sale, demonstrations
of 2068 disc systems and LOTS of free advice; 2068 UPDATE, the
magazine for 2068 disc systems had free issues on the table; a
handout from the John Qliger Co., maker of T/S related hardware;
a large double table presided over by Tim and Stephanie Woods of
"Time Designs", featuring all of their back isssues, their
newest books, 2068 tech manuals, T/S T-Shirts, and an expanse of
T/S hardware, Foote Print printer I/Fs, and even an original
Spectrum Plus!; A+ Computer featured the new 288, with the Psion
Meaanizer "pocket file cabinet" also in evidence; and a swap

.@, which tended to be empty mainly because things lasted
about five minutes before deals were struck and new homes found.
VISTA nember Tim Ward had great success here, selling both his
3" disc drive and surplus 2050 modem. Ed Grey Enterprises was
represented by Ed and son Damali, who dispensed copies of Loader
V and Spectera-64, 2050 modem boards, Z-SIO interfaces and Sams
ComputerFacts with plenty of advise, conversation and good humor
to go around. Free newsletters and back issues were distributed
by CATS of Fairfax Station, VA; Triangle Sinclair Users Group of
Carrboro, NC; The Hacker from Las Vegas, NV; the hosts, CCAT/S
of Clackanas County, OR; and VISTA of Vashon Island, WA.

Two vendors put together outstanding dispalys of T/S
merchandise --- RMG Enterprises of Oregon City, OR and Zebra
Systems of Woodhaven, NY. RMG literally brought a ton of stuff
-- hardware such as disc drives, printers, TS-2@68s and a number
or new TS-1500s, modems, PC-8300s, power supplies and cases,
their line of Larken Disc interfaces, and surplus T/S ware,
including power supplies, 2068 keyboards and bare 1/S-1000
motherboards as spare parts for $4. I plugged mine in and it
worked perfectly! The bounty didn't stop there either, as RMG
offered a number of British Sinclair magazines at $2.75 each,
cases of T/S books, lots of software, discs, disc banks and Fair
Buttons. Needless to say, theirs was a busy booth. Zebra Systens
also earned praise (and customers) for their large line of
software for Sinclair computers of all kinds.

SEPT & OCT NITE-TIMES NEWS

They offered Spectrum games and Timex 2068 software at $5 each,
TS-1000 tapes at 5/$10, Zebra's line of graphics software for
the 15-2068, the last dozen Zebra Graphics Tablets at $45,
Menotech 64K and 32K RAMS at the lowest prices I've seen,
original 2X-81 kits and non-working ZX-8ls as parts, and much
nore. At the end of the Fair, Zebra had a “fire sale’, with
TS-100@ software at $] each, and Timex 2068 software at $2. Not
to be outdone, Ed Grey began a round of price cutting, and he
was heard saying "I done want to haul any of this back to
L.A.!". "Hectic" best describes the ensuing activity. At the
VISTA booth, the public domain software tapes went quickly -
librarian Tin Ward brought five sets of five tapes and was
taking orders by the end of the Fair. The VISTA newsletter
special edition was a popular “freebie” and the demonstration
graphics disc ran on ay TS-15@@ both days with no hang-ups. Also
stopping by the VISTA booth were members Don Walterman (Sterling
Heights, MI), Joan Kealy (El Paso, TX), and Clarence Hamilton
(Vernon, BC). It is really a pleasure to finally meet the people
you spend time writing letters to. The final "THANK YOU" goes to
the CCAT/S User Group, hosts for the event. They were extremely
well represented with a number of QLs and 20685 set up,
demonstrating computer control of machines, graphic likenesses
of each group member, a BetaBasic (2068 extended language)
display program -- a little of everything. Another of their
special touches was the club banner, four by six feet and very
nicely done; adding to the "no nonsense” look of their area, it
Said "Here's a club that gets things done”. That they did, and
a great debt of thanks is owed to CCAT/S, hosts; Time Designs”
and RMG Enterprises, sponsors; and Rod Gowen, producer, who
really mobilized his forces and knocked himself out to give us,
the T/S community, one of the best events ever. Door prizes and
deals were in abundance, and to sum it all up in the words of Ed
Gray, "Where were you?”.
A Z2X-TERM*80 QUIRK
By Fred Nachbaur
Downloaded From Nicholson Nitetine Network

Z1-TERM280 sends a DEL (Delete = ASCII 7Fh = 127d) when you
press DELETE. Unfortunately, the MichTron BBS program used by
the NNN does not recognize this to “delete last character sent."
Instead, it uses BS (Backspace = ASCII 08h). The same very
probably holds true for some other BBS's. There are two ways to
get around this: an easy way, and a better way.

The easy way (requires no program modifications) is to send
a CONTROL H (shift 3 then H). Each CTRL H will delete back one
space. This is a workable method if you're a reasonably good
typist, and catch your error shortly after making it.

The “better” way is to modify Z1-TERM180's lookup tables to send
a BS when pressing DELETE. Do this as follows:

1. LOAD ZX-TERM%80 (either the original or your reconfigured
version). Press BREAK when loaded. (continued on page 6)

SEPT & OCT NITE-TIMES NEWS

A ZX-TERM*8@ QUIRK
continued from page 5

2. Enter the following commands:
LET A$(9)=CHR$ 87
LET A$(344)=CHR$ 8

3. Save the modified program for future use.

Delete (Shift @) now sends a BS, but continues to print a
left-pointing arrow. If you need to send a DEL for some
reason, you can still do so using SYMBOL SHIFT 8 (also
shows as left-arrow).

UPDATE Magazine
1317 Stratford Ave.
Panama City, FL 32404

Dear Timex - Sinclair User,
TS-2068 - Sinclair QL - Sinclair Z88

UPDATE Magazine is expanding. The October 1988 issue will begin coverage of the
Sinclair QL, the 288, and the TS-2068. UPDATE Magazine does not seek to draw away
subscribers from other publicatins but rather to support the users with a new and
unique group of services. UPDATE highly recommends that all users subscribe to Time
Designs, Syncware News, and Quantum Levels magazines (As well as UPDATE). This way
the users will get 85% of ALL information published about the user's computer system.
The other 15% comes in User Group Newsletters.

UPDATE has a year of publishing under the belt and has a pretty good idea about
what the users want. UPDATE is not "casual reading", but is "Programming Intensive".
Programming is covered from Beginner to Advanced level. Other features of the
magazine are Reviews, Telecomputing, Disk drive systems, Hardware projects, and
Peripheral devices.

UPDATE is a "participating" magazine. Most of the articles and utilities
presented in each issue are by Guest Writers. These writers are the experts amongst
us who freely give their programming expertise out of their desire to help others.
Why a Quarterly magazine? Well, it takes three months to put together an issue of
UPDATE. All of the programs and utilities are NEW, and need to be tested. Complete
instructions are given in the UPDATE pages. Then there is the "Issue Disk" to
assemble.

The Key-in projects vary from "one liners" to extensive softwares. These
programs and utilities of each issue are offered in "Issue Disks" at a very low price
for those who want ready to use programs. UPDATE shares the proceeds from Issue Disk
sales with the contributing authors. This is just a token to show appreciation for
their efforts and to pay for their expense. The Issue Disk is supplied in all disk
` formats, and for the TS-2068 Oliger DOS, Larken DOS, and Aerco FD-68 DOS.

A primary goal of UPDATE is to sponsor the development of DISK BASED software and
utilities for the three computer systems. Already, this goal is being realized for
the TS-2068. In the case of the QL, UPDATE will offer Disk Software and utilities,
plus a dubbing service for those who use MDV only. North American software sources
will be developed. There is a critical shortage of useful QL utilities because of the
low profit potential for such programs. QL utilities will be of continuing emphasis.

You are cordially invited to SUBSCRIBE TO UPDATE MAGAZINE. Subscription is
$15.00 per year of issues. Four back issues are available for $15.00. These back
issues cover the TS-2068 only. Inclusive QL coverage begins with the OCTOBER 1988
issue. Please fill in the data base questions on the back side which will be kept by
UPDATE for your support. - Bill Jones, Publisher.
